Samantha Muise is destroying her life; (omuse) wrote, @ 2012-01-06 16:04:00
When you say love is a simple chemical reaction, can't say I agree;
"All her life, THE CALLIOPE has been nothing less than perfect; her grades were straights A’s, she was bilingual by the time that she graduated high school, and she was accepted early decision into her dream school Columbia to study English. Her charmed life became even more perfect when THE BOREAS asked her to be his girlfriend. When their relationship ended abruptly, however, the young lady’s life fell to shambles. Her best friend, THE TAYGETE, isn’t sure how to handle the breakdown, and is now carrying the heartbroken youth back to their apartment after long nights of drinking and making out with various men. Thankfully, THE DIONYSUS has a plan for his good friend THE ORESTES to come sweep her off her feet and straighten her life out once more." OUT OF CHARACTER.

IN CHARACTER.
NAME: Samantha Lillian Muise AGE/DOB: 20 SEXUALITY: Heterosexual MORTAL FAMILY: Father: Benjamin Muise. A pediatric doctor at a small family practice in the New York suburbs, where Sam grew up. She's definitely a Daddy's Girl and has always been very close to her father. Mother: Tracey Muise, nee Carlton. A part-time receptionist at Benjamin's practice and part-time homemmaker. Sam and Tracey have the complicated and fraught relationship of any young woman and her mother. Brother: Kyle Muise. Sam's little brother is the troublemaker of the family, and has always teased her about her work ethic and study habits, but Sam loves him anyway. He's the only member of her family who has any idea what she's currently going through, although he doesn't know the half of it (because if he did, their father would be at the school to take her home within the day.) He's currently in his senior year of highschool.
PREMADE: The Calliope ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS: THE BOREAS: ex-boyfriend and breaker of her heart; THE TAYGETE: best friend forever; THE DIONYSUS: friend; THE ORESTES: potential love interest. QUOTE: You say love is a simple chemical reaction. Can't say I agree, cause my chemicals left me a beautiful disaster.
OCCUPATION: English major at Columbia University. RESIDENCE: King's Courtyard, two bedroom unit with [ROOMMATE; preferably the Taygete.]
APPEARANCE: Sam is definitely a pretty girl, in the sweet, unthreatening way that people generally refer to as "girl next door." She's neither particularly short nor strikingly tall, her build more or less average; it would have been called 'athletic' not too long ago, but in recent months she's stopped going for runs or doing anything really physical and healthy, and she's not been eating all that much either, so she's tending toward the skinny side. Her hair is an unremarkable but becoming golden brown, heavy and slightly wavy and falling just past her shoulders. Her brows are almost completely straight, the eyes beneath them a clear greyish-blue colour that makes them seem even bigger than they actually are. There's still a bit of baby-fat to her cheeks, though it's evident that before too many more years it'll be gone completely, leaving the wide cheekbones beneath to show through.
Sam has always dressed nicely and demurely in pastel colours and conservative but flattering cuts. She's always been more for skirts than jeans, and she never, ever wears sweats unless she's going for a run. Lately, however, she's been taking a lot less care with her wardrobe during the day- jeans and borrowed t-shirts and who cares how clean they are- while she's accumulated a slightly different one for the night-time and the parties and bars she's found herself attending more and more: darker, more revealing, the uniform of the troubled youth that she's always avoided. Her descent into darkness is revealed in her clothing as much as it is in the less tangible aspects of her life. HAIR COLOR/EYE COLOR: Light brown/Grey HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5'4"/107 lbs DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Those huge grey eyes are pretty hard to overlook. PB:LyndsyFonseca
LIKES: British literature, silver jewelry, mid-length skirts, daffodils, singer-songwriters, canaries, boys who cook, pale rose and teal, golden retrievers, cardigans, china dolls, the Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice,, hugs, white wine, being liked. Lately: tequila, vodka, staying out all night, forgetting about things. DISLIKES: Seafood, grey days, stilettos, being cold, horseradish, spiders, yappy little dogs, having a stuffy nose, fluorescent lighting, Ernest Hemingway novels. HABITS & QUIRKS: Sam bites her nails non-stop. Also she cries a lot lately, and her eyes are usually red and a little swollen as a result. PERSONALITY: Sam has always been that girl. You know the one: the one who managed to be well-liked, even popular, throughout her schooldays despite being beloved of the teachers and spending every Saturday night doing homework (and extra credit, and then some studying on the side...) The one who was in pretty much every club, from band to Lacrosse Team, and could have sat with any group she liked at lunchtime and been welcome. The one who made homecoming court, and came in second for prom queen, and whom nobody even tried to beat for Valedictorian. The one the boys were all half in-love with, the one the girls all wished they could be like, and all without anyone resenting her for it. The one who managed to be sweet and generous and really down-to-earth despite it all. That girl.
Perfection has always been a matter of course for Samantha, a mantle that she's worn easily, gracefully and with no apparent strain or burden. This isn't to say she hasn't worked hard to maintain it: all those nights studying, all those typical wild teenage opportunities left untaken, the boys unkissed, the parties unattended, the experiences unenjoyed- she felt them, sometimes longed for them. But to Sam it was always more important to be good, to be wonderful, to be everything that her parents wanted her to be. And once she was on that path, once that was her reputation, it was impossible for her to stray from it. Failure, disappointment- these are, or were, always the most frightening things in the world to Samantha Muise.
So: a little on the serious side, very determined, lady-like to the point of being dubbed a 'goody two-shoes,' but always with a kind word to say and help to offer: these things sum up the essence of Sam's personality very well. Or at least, they did up until she got her heart broken. Shattered, really. [THE BOREAS] was her first love, and she fell into that love as hard as she falls into anything she does. When he dumper her, so great was her distress that everything else seemed to stop mattering as much as it always had before, or really at all; what girl with a heart as broken as Sam's is can care about her grades, or her future, or even being good like she's always been? Since the breakup she's been on a dark path, having apparently thrown herself into self-destruction as hard as she ever did into studying or love. Good-girl Sam is gone, or at least in serious hiding, replaced by a wild child who's drowning her pain in as many parties and as much alcohol as she can manage.
HISTORY: Samantha Muise has lived near New York City all of her life, and wanted to go to Columbia for nearly as long. Paraphernalia from the Icy League school decorated her childhood bedroom, and when the children were asked to write their life's ambitions for the fifth-grade yearbook, hers said "Go to COLUMBIA!!!" complete with a smiley-face for extra emphasis. It surprised absolutely no one that she knew the name of the University she wanted to attended at the age of nine; Sam had, after all, been in the gifted program since first grade, and had never, as far as anyone knew, failed to turn in a single piece of homework or get less than an A on a test in her entire life. These were trends that would continue throughout her school days.
If their daughter's scholarly habits- or rather, her single-minded determination from such a young age to ace EVERYTHING- worried Benjamin and Tracey Muise, they never pursued their concerns. After all, Sam was a well-adjusted young girl, one who was involved in any number of school and community activities and had a surprisingly large number of people who called her friends. She endured almost no bullying as a child despite her grades and academic bent; for some reason, everyone seemed to like her, popular snobs, jocks, and band-geeks alike counted her among their numbers, and she never lacked for someone to sit with at lunch. If anything, Samantha's life was charmed.
Besides, from the time she was four, her parents had another child to deal with, and Kyle turned out to be a great deal more trouble to raise than Sam was. He was born premature and fussy, and while by the time he was a toddler he was completely healthy he never stopped being a handful. All things considered, it was very easy to appreciate Sam's Perfect Girl act and to let any concerns that needing so badly to be flawless wasn't entirely healthy to slide by unnoticed. And if she had a huge group of casual friends but almost no close ones; if she never went to the parties that typically characterize highschool, never in fact got into any sort of trouble whatsoever; if she never went on a single date despite the multiplicity of boys who would willingly have taken her on one; well, who was going to notice that if Samantha herself didn't seem to, let alone mind?
It all paid off for her when she was accepted early decision to Columbia, with a partial scholarship that made the school downright affordable to her parents and eliminated any need for her to get a job while in school. Sam was over the moon about it. And so when the time came she went off, effervescently excited and bubbling over with potential.
Her dedication to her academic life continued but was tempered by two things. The first was making her first real, close friend in [THE TAYGETE].
The second was meeting [THE BOREAS].
She'd avoided dates, boys, and all of that nonsense during highschool, but now it was time, she figured, to loosen her harsh strictures on herself and her time just a little. That, and she couldn't resist him: from the first time she saw [THE BOREAS], she was head over heels, and when he actually asked her out she actually, literally squealed with glee before answering (with a resounding yes, of course.) Their romance was a whirlwind into which Sam threw her whole heart- just as she was wont to do with everything she set her mind to. Before long, she could no longer imagine her life without him.
And then he dumped her.
There was no really good explanation, nothing that could bring her closure. Just a breakup.
Absolutely devastated, Samantha did something that she'd never done before in her life: she went out to a party and she got drunk. Unused to alcohol, unable to pace herself, and quite frankly not caring as long as it stopped hurting, she got absolutely raging, black-out drunk.
She woke up the next morning in the bed of a guy she'd never seen before and whose name she couldn't have guessed if you'd given her hints. Horribly ashamed, sick, and not one iota less heartbroken than she had been the night before, she dragged herself back to her apartment, curled up in the shower with all her clothes on, and stayed there all day. And then that night she got up, got dressed, and went out and did it all again. Well, not all of it; this time she managed not to wake up in anyone else's bed. But for the most part that first night of devastated excess set the pattern of most of the nights that followed. And instead of feeling better, Sam just keeps finding herself feeling worse and worse. But she can't bring herself to stop. The hours when she's too drunk to care are the only hours she feels all right.
POWER:INSPIRATION: The people around Sam tend to experience intense bursts of creativity in whatever subject they are most drawn to. A poet will find lovely stanzas popping into his head from nowhere, a chef will dream up new recipes in a snap, and a scientist may well stumble onto a hypothesis he never would have thought up otherwise. The frequency, duration and potency of these creative bursts depend on how much time is spent in Sam's presence and how close their emotional relationship is; the latter, too, effects exactly how many of the ideas thought up under her influence are directly about Sam in some way. MEMORIES:
The birth of her son Orpheus.
Inspiring the Odyssey.
Loving Ares, the god of war.

I keep thinking I see him. Everywhere. Everywhere. It doesn’t even have to look like him, just- the way they turn their heads, or someone has his cologne, or the way they laugh, and I just see him. Right there where they are. Just for a second. Like really see him, I could swear it’s him. But it never is.
This is probably what going crazy is like. Except crazy people aren’t supposed to know they’re crazy. Ha, ha.
Wonder, if he was at one of the parties, would I try to make out with him? Hell maybe that’s already happened. God. Ok, no, I’d remember that. I’d have to. Would anyone tell me if I did that? [TAYGETE] wouldn’t let me do that. She’s not always there though. God why am I doing this I am such a fuckup I can’t even
